Biodiesel - the facts

Here is where you talk about biodiesel. If you want more schematic images or a process format (showing how biodiesel is made etc) we can add that in.

What is biodiesel?

Biodiesel is a lower carbon fuel made from vegetable and animal fats that can be used in diesel engines. In our case, we take waste vegetable cooking oils from Kapiti food businesses and filter them to get rid of the crispies. The oils are then reacted with alcohol (methanol) using a strong alkaline catalyst (sodium hydroxide), which yields biodiesel (mono-alkyl methyl esters) with glycerin as the waste product. (If you can use our glycerin, please get in touch.)
